The Pittsylvania County Literacy Program provides 1-on-1 tutoring to adult county residents who desire to improve their literacy skills. Students range from young adults who need additional help with passing the GED, to older individuals who are low level readers.
Tutoring services are also provided to Pittsylvania County jail inmates as requested.
Students and tutors generally meet at local libraries or churches.
Offsite Adult Basic Education Centers
In addition, there are 2 offsite Adult Basic Education Centers to accommodate students in the northern and southern areas of the county.
The Brosville Center is open on Monday evenings, and the Pittsville Center is open on Saturday mornings.
Computer instruction is available at the Pittsville Center.
There is no cost to students or tutors.
Materials are provided.
New students and new volunteer tutors are always welcome!
Tutors are required to:
Be at least 18 years old
Have a high school diploma or a GED
Have a clean criminal history; to have transportation
Commit to meet with their student at least 1 hour per week
Have a desire to improve the quality of life for others
