OUR MISSION: Pittsylvania County Parks and Recreation seeks to enhance lives through quality and diverse recreation opportunities.
Since its creation in 2011, our department has worked to build a quality agency by providing professionally managed youth sports, quality athletic fields, trails, award-winning parks, the Pittsylvania County Community Center (home office) and Dog Park.
- Where are your parks located?
Wayside Park is located at 223 Ridge St, Hurt, VA 24563.
We also have parks located at the county’s four middle schools. Each park has a playground walking track and picnic shelter.

- Do you have rentable space at your Community Center for a birthday party?
We have small and large rooms available for rent at our Community Center in Chatham. Birthday parties, anniversary's, reunions, graduations and graduation parties are just a few of the events that our center is rented for. Rental policy and application is available on our website or by visiting our main office at 115 South Main Street in Chatham.
- How do I know which Booster Club I need to sign up with?
Pittsylvania County is divided into four recreation booster clubs (Tunstall, Dan River, Chatham and Gretna). The participant should register for the middle school district in which they live. They are as follows: Tunstall - Stony Mill, Brosville and Twin Springs Elementary and Tunstall Middle School Chatham - Chatham and Union Hall Elementary and Chatham Middle School Dan River - Kentuck and Southside Elementary and Dan River Middle School Gretna - Gretna, Mount Airy and Hurt Elementary and Gretna Middle School Please note: - Twin Springs Elementary feeds more than one middle school district including Tunstall, Chatham and Dan River. Confirm which district your child is in before registering. - Southside Elementary feeds more than one middle school district including Dan River and Chatham. Confirm which district your child is in before registering.
- How do I get to the Ringgold Rail Trail?
The 5.5 mile Ringgold Rail Trail is located a couple miles past the Ringgold Golf Course on Ringgold Road. There is also a trail head on Shawnee Road and Kerns Church Road.
- How do I sign my child up for a sport?
You may register online (www.pittsylvaniacountyva.gov/recreation), in person at the Recreation Department at 115 South Main Street or by calling the office at 432-7736.
- I just moved to the area and would like sign my child up to play youth sports. How do I do that?
It is the policy of Pittsylvania County Parks and Recreation that any family that moves into the County or enrolls their son or daughter into a County school after registration has closed will be placed on a team. However, once games have begun no new participants will be added.
- What if the program is full or you have missed the registration deadline?
You are encouraged to register early for all programs. Participation for all programs is on a first come, first serve basis. Please check registration information on each individual program. Those wishing to register after the registration deadline will be placed on a team if there is room available. If there is no room, their name will be placed on a waiting list and added at a later date if possible.
- What do you have to do to become a youth coach?
Our coaches are volunteers and a valuable part of our organization. Booster clubs are responsible for the recruitment and assignment of coaches for all age groups. All coaches must pass a background screening before being allowed to coach.
- How do I express a concern about a coach, official, parent or staff member?
Please discuss with your Booster Club or contact the Parks and Recreation office at 432-7736 and we will be happy to discuss this with you.
