Recycling Delays at Convenience Centers

Pittsylvania County Solid Waste staff have struggled to keep up with the recycling boxes at many of our convenience centers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. This difficulty in keeping the boxes empty can be attributed to several factors: Recycling Delays

👷Short-Staffed. The Pittsylvania County Solid Waste team would typically have seven drivers that can transport boxes to the landfill to be emptied and bring empty boxes back to the sites. Due to national difficulties with hiring, we have been down two drivers. One of those positions will be filled soon, and we encourage anyone who is interested to apply on our website
🗑️Increased Trash. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the amount of trash coming into our convenience centers has grown significantly. When fully-staffed, our solid waste team can keep up with the sites, but the team is currently running lots of overtime just to keep the trash boxes emptied. We have added additional boxes at many of our busiest sites and it has still been difficult for our team to keep up.
♻️More Recycling Options. Pittsylvania County Solid Waste added several new recycling boxes so that almost almost every single convenience center has recycling options. Unfortunately, the amount of trash drastically increased and the number of drivers decreased at the same time.

What Are We Doing to Fix it?

In addition to working hard to fill the vacant driver positions, which will allow for our staff to more adequately handle the volume of trash and recycling flowing through the centers, these are some steps we are taking to ensure that all of our citizens can conveniently dispose of their trash and recycle:
  • All drivers are running overtime right now, which is a necessity to keep up with just the trash coming into the convenience sites.
  • A part-time site attendant with a commercial driver's license is picking up recycling boxes on the weekend.
  • Several area partners have helped empty boxes in recent weeks and remain available to help if needed.
