With decades of experience in firefighting and public safety operations, Chris Key has been named the Interim Director of Pittsylvania County Public Safety. After a long and accomplished career with the City of Danville Fire Department and volunteer fire experience across several agencies, Key started as the Deputy Director for Pittsylvania County Public Safety on December 1, 2021.
"I am grateful to have the opportunity to lead Pittsylvania County Public Safety through this transition period," Key said. "I am honored to play a role in guiding and administering the critical services that the Public Safety Department provides to our entire community."
Since joining the Public Safety Department late last year, Key has supported several instrumental administrative and operational projects. In addition to coordinating with each of the County's volunteer agencies, Key has equipped the County's new air truck to serve as a mobile air supply system, secured firefighting gear for each of the Public Safety EMT/Firefighters, and helped manage the allocation of ARPA funds for volunteer stipends and agency purchases.
"Chris Key has demonstrated professionalism during his extensive journey in public safety, both as a volunteer and career provider," said Interim County Administrator Clarence Monday. "I am confident that he will effectively lead the Public Safety Department through this transition.”
Chris Key has decades of experience in public safety and fire service management and operations. Key spent more than 30 years with the Danville Fire Department, rising to the rank of Battalion Chief beginning in 2014. He also has memberships at volunteer departments across the Piedmont, including Brosville Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Key holds an Associate Degree in Fire Science from Danville Community College.
This announcement comes after Chris Slemp, who had served as the Pittsylvania County Public Safety Director since 2017, was promoted to Director of Operations. Key will assume his new duties beginning on May 1. The details for appointing the permanent Public Safety Director will be announced in the near future.
